Trenches,” truly feels like a movie.

A gas explosion sends firefighters, paramedics, doctors, and police officers rushing to the scene from the start, effectively highlighting the relationships across the shows, including unexpected connections. For instance, Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) and Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) find themselves trapped underground while her husband Severide (Taylor Kinney) and his fiancée Burgess (Marina Squerciati) anxiously search for a way to rescue them and solve the case. Additionally, Dr. Charles (Oliver Platt) provides reassurance to Mouch (Christian Stolte), who fears for his wife Platt’s (Amy Morton) safety during surgery. These moments enrich the narrative, making it all the more engaging.

Archer (Steven Weber) steps into the action by donning turnouts to join Severide, Herrmann (David Eigenberg), Mouch, and Pascal (Dermot Mulroney) underground. A memorable exchange occurs when Ruzek, dismissing Archer’s insistence on medical treatment, quips, “Are you a doctor?” to which Archer responds, “Are you?”

Tension escalates early on between Mouch and Platt, highlighted by Mouch’s oversight of a planned celebration for her birthday. As Platt, Ruzek, and a former officer-turned-security guard, Bates (Jennifer Regan), pursue the arsonists responsible for the gas explosion, Platt is shot multiple times in the back. Mouch rushes to find her, and despite the chief’s orders to evacuate due to structural concerns, he, Severide, and Herrmann refuse to leave without Platt.

Mouch discovers Platt bleeding out in an elevator and pleads with her to hold on. At Med, Platt flatlines, leading to a tense moment where Mouch, filled with dread, watches Ripley (Luke Mitchell) and Lenox (Sarah Ramos) attempt to save her using an experimental cooling treatment. Mouch’s despair peaks when he learns this method has only had limited success in animal studies. Dr. Charles steps in, assuring Mouch that both Ripley and Platt are strong and capable, reminding him that Platt married him for his determination.

Later, as Mouch anxiously sits by Platt’s side, he expresses his love for her, conveying their unique bond. Fortunately, Platt recovers, requiring months of physical therapy. When she wakes, she shares valuable information with Voight (Jason Beghe) that aids in the rescue of those trapped underground.

As the situation unfolds, Kidd finds herself leading Truck to a stranded train underground. Unfortunately, a tunnel collapse traps her with Ruzek. Meanwhile, Severide and Burgess are caught above ground, their concern for their respective partners palpable. While Ruzek updates Burgess, tensions arise as they realize the shooter might be among the injured on the train. Kidd’s determination to stay focused on her responsibilities, despite the risks, showcases her strength as a leader.

In an effort to piece together the puzzle, Ruzek uncovers a potential suspect underground. Simultaneously, with the help of Platt’s earlier discovery, Intelligence locates the offenders’ hideout. In a harrowing climax, the rescue team breaks through to the train just as chaos ensues with one of the offenders taking Kidd hostage. The situation resolves with their rescue.

Ultimately, the investigation reveals the motivations behind the chaos: the offenders had stolen a data storage drive containing city employees’ pension funds. Bates is identified as the shooter who struck Platt, leading to a confrontation regarding her ethical betrayal of her role as a police officer. Voight informs her that she has broken the vow made to protect their city.
