found himself confronting a particularly sensitive issue at the firehouse. While Season 12, Episode 6 was strong in terms of character development and exposition, it also brought to light Firehouse 51’s biggest issue by revealing a notable absence in the episode.

In Season 13, Episode 5, *Chicago Fire* notably missed the presence of Herrmann and Kylie. The absence of key members from Engine 51 was felt throughout the episode, especially considering Herrmann’s long-standing role since Season 1, while Kylie has gradually become part of the team after sporadic appearances since Season 8. Both characters play crucial roles within Engine 51, which is led by Lieutenant Herrmann. Kylie had previously been part of a different firehouse before being recruited by Kidd to join Firehouse 51 as a replacement for Damon, who left early in Season 13.

Typically, emergency calls for Firehouse 51 would involve all of its teams—Engine 51, Truck 81, and Squad 3—so Herrmann and Kylie’s absence raised questions about why Engine 51 did not participate in the fire response. Unfortunately, Season 13, Episode 5 did not provide an explanation for this omission. It’s possible that Engine 51 was occupied with another emergency off-screen, but the lack of clarity left viewers wanting.

Herrmann and Kylie’s absence highlighted a recurring issue within *Chicago Fire*: how underutilized Engine 51 is as a unit. As the primary firefighting vehicle of Firehouse 51, it is surprising that Engine 51 has been used less frequently compared to other teams, such as Squad 3, which features Severide’s team, or Truck 81, led by Kidd. Throughout the show’s 12 seasons, Engine 51 has received less character exposure and development.
